Account and machine hygiene: password-protect the login, no shared admin access, encrypt transfers, and use ZoneAlarm or Firewall Notifier plus Google Drive Sync when the box is not yours.

Do not let other people have direct access to your account, especially in your absence

Place public files like music and movies in a common location.

Do not share your password.

Have limited accounts (and not administrative accounts) for other users.

Do not transfer this software without encrypting.

If you are working on a computer that is not yours

First have an account created for you.

Install software in this account.

Encrypt all associated folders.

Either install ZoneAlarm Free Edition.

Block outgoing connections.

Use FireWall Notifier.

Use Google Drive

And Google Sync (desktop application).
